# Welcome to Accountant

Personal finance, the double-entry way.

**Accountant** is a personal finance app for Android, built on real double-entry accounting and made easy. It was designed by a Certified Public Accountant, so your books stay accurate without you having to think like a bookkeeper.

You say what happened (you paid for something, received money, moved money or bought on credit) and Accountant records both sides of the entry. Your accounts always balance, your net worth is real, and your reports can be trusted.

## Start here: the three basics

Three ideas make everything in Accountant click:

1. **Your money in one equation:** total assets = total liabilities + net worth.
2. **The account structure:** account type › account category › account. A category groups accounts; it isn't an account itself.
3. **Six kinds of transactions:** pick what happened, and Accountant records both sides for you.

## Try the demo first

During setup you can turn on **Add demo data**. It fills the app with a few months of realistic records, so you can explore every screen before entering your own:

* a salaried person who rents an apartment
* emergency savings, a personal loan and a condo mortgage
* several credit cards: one overdue, one due soon and one paid in full
* overseas freelance work paid in foreign currencies, travel cash and a small crypto holding
* budgets, scheduled bills and upcoming payments

The demo is illustrative data, not advice about typical incomes or prices. When you're ready, remove it in **Settings › Remove demo data**. See [First setup](/accountant/getting-started/first-setup.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://tribalfs.gitbook.io/accountant/welcome-to-accountant.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
