# First setup

Set your reporting currency, decide on demo data, and turn on reminders.

**What you'll do:** finish the welcome screens and get Accountant ready for your first transaction. It takes about a minute.

## 1. Finish setup

When you open Accountant for the first time, you see **Welcome to Accountant**.

1. On the **Finish setup** card, tap **Reporting currency** and choose the currency you think in, usually your home currency. All totals and reports are shown in it.
2. Decide whether to turn on **Add demo data** (see below).
3. Read the **Terms and conditions** and **Privacy Policy** (both are linked), then tap **Continue**.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Reporting currency is not a limit.** Your bank, cash and card accounts can each use a different currency. The reporting currency is only the one used for totals and reports. You can change it later in **Settings › Reporting currency**; see [Multi-currency](/accountant/transactions/multi-currency.md).
{% endhint %}

## 2. Demo data or a fresh start

**Add demo data** fills the app with sample accounts and a few months of transactions, so you can explore the reports, the dashboard, credit cards, loans and multi-currency without entering anything yourself.

* **Turn it on** if you want to look around first. Remove it later with **Settings › Remove demo data**. Your own records are kept; only the sample data is removed.
* **Leave it off** to start with an empty ledger and the default account categories.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Sample data can't be synced. If you turn on **Sync across devices** while demo data is present, the app asks you to **Remove sample data** first.
{% endhint %}

## 3. Transaction reminders

Next, the app asks to send you notifications. Tap **Enable notifications** to get reminders for scheduled transactions, credit card due dates, loan payments and savings goal milestones. Tap **Skip** if you don't want them; you can allow them later in Android settings.

## What next?

1. [Set up your accounts](/accountant/accounts/setting-up-accounts.md): your cash, bank accounts, cards and loans, with their current balances.
2. [Record your first transaction](/accountant/transactions/recording-a-transaction.md).
3. Take a short tour: [Navigating the app](/accountant/getting-started/navigating-the-app.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://tribalfs.gitbook.io/accountant/getting-started/first-setup.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
